Foxes Struggle on Tough First Day at Edgbaston

Warwickshire’s march towards the Rothesay County Championship title continued apace at Edgbaston as relegation-bound Leicestershire became the latest to be crushed by their irrepressible bowling attack.

The visitors chose to bat in a bid to earn batting points essential to their survival hopes. Their plan went spectacularly pear-shaped as they succumbed for 125 to effectively confirm their demotion. Only Ben Cox (33, 56 balls) and Sol Budinger (27, 49) resisted for long against a bang-in-form attack led by Ethan Bamber (four for 42) and Chris Woakes (three for 20).  

The home side, which began the match with one hand on the title, now has one and three-quarters hands on it after reaching 130 for four (Sam Hain 37 not out, 99) before the close. Their breathtaking momentum in the last month has been a real collective effort but led by a bowling attack which has reduced the opposition to 156, 207, 325/8, 115, 154, 69, 65, 134, 189, and 125.

Leicestershire’s strange decision to bat first suited Warwickshire’s plan perfectly and their rampant attack took two wickets in the first two overs. Sheridon Gumbs played inside Bamber’s fourth ball which hit off-stump and Rishi Patel offered no shot to Woakes’ sixth and was lbw. When Steve Eskinazi carelessly lifted Woakes to point, the Foxes were 15 for three.

With overseas linchpin Nick Kelly having returned home injured and Hamza Shaikh unable to play against the club from which he is still technically on loan, Leicestershire were in early disarray. They never recovered as Sol Budinger and Jonathan Tattersall fell to successive deliveries. Tattersall, lbw, became Olly Hannon-Dalby 370^th first class wicket for Warwickshire and Budinger (27, 49) edged the next ball, from Ed Barnard, to second slip where Rob Yates accepted his 37^th catch of the season.

Cox and skipper Ian Holland dug in either side of lunch before Bamber struck twice more. Holland, having eked ten from 50 minutes, edged to third slip and Ben Green nicked to first. A perfect outswinger from Woakes ended Cox’s diligent innings, Ajaz Patel dragged on a pull at Bamber and when Josh Hull offered a simple return catch to Barnard, the Foxes’ plan to harvest first-day batting points had utterly failed.

Warwickshire’s reply started badly when Yates played on to Holland’s seventh ball. Dan Mousley struck four quick fours to get the innings going but then changed his bat and edged the next ball, from Holland, to third slip. Will Young edged Green to first slip. Vansh Jani started with two sparkling boundaries but then skied a mow at spinner Patel.

Among all the bit parts, Hain delivered the vital central role. As composed and organised as ever, he eased his side in front, accompanied by a flurry of boundaries from Barnard, before the close.
