Foxes Women win thriller against Sussex on the final ball of the match.

With bat in hand, Sussex struggled to score freely consistently, partly thanks to a fairly consistent flow of wickets. Green’s 40 not out helped the hosts to 130/7, giving her side something to bowl at.

In reply, Sussex picked up three wickets in the powerplay and after two from Johnson in the fourteenth over, Leicestershire looked to be out of the contest at 85/6. However, Davies hit 40 to bring the Foxes back into contention and despite her dismissal on the second ball of the last over, the visitors won by 1 wicket with the final delivery of the match.

A few clouds threatened to disturb the sun at the County Ground in Hove, as Foxes Women skipper Brooker won the toss and elected to bowl first.

It took four overs for the Leicestershire bowlers to break the opening partnership – Singh striking Collis, attempting a reverse sweep on the pad for 13.

In the tenth over, Johnson dragged a Ketan full toss to Singh at mid-wicket, falling for 5 with Sussex ending that over 62/2. Three overs later, a direct hit from Brooker saw Adams run out for 40.

In the sixteenth over, Chissell took two wickets in as many balls, starting with a good catch at long-on from Davies to dismiss Wilkinson for nine, before bowling Tulloch with the next delivery. In her following over, she picked up the wicket of Clarke for 2 as she didn’t return to her crease after missing the delivery, resulting in her being stumped by Watson.

Singh bowled Stanley for 5 with the final delivery of the innings as she missed a ramp. Green’s unbeaten 40 helped the hosts to a below par 130/7 from their twenty overs.

At the end of the first over, Brooker was bowled by Tulloch for 4, missing a drive aimed back down the ground. Two overs later, Sweet slog swept a Stanley delivery, but she picked out Tulloch at cow corner, departing for 8.

Sussex captain Green bowled the final over of the powerplay, dismissing Weston for 6 as she played all around a straight delivery – the Foxes ending the powerplay 34/3.

Teekasingh couldn’t find a consistent flow of runs, making 15 from 23 deliveries before clubbing a half-tracker from Lewis to Green at mid-wickets.

Watson played a controlled innings, until she swiped at a Johnson delivery, resulting in a leading edge finding it’s way to Green at mid-off, departing for 23. Johnson took another wicket two balls later as Chissell missed a sweep, falling lbw for a duck.

At the end of the seventeenth over, Phillips was run out by Mullins for 9 after a mix up left her stranded coming back for a second. Two overs later, Singh was bowled by Tulloch for 5.

Davies had been dragging the Foxes back into contention with the visitors requiring 7 to win in the final over. However, she heaved the second ball of the over to Johnson at cow corner, departing for a crucial 40 – Stanley taking her second of the match.

With two deliveries remaining, Leicestershire still needed 5 runs for victory – the first of which was squeezed through the infield on the offside by Ketan and three runs were taken. Wrightson drove the final ball aerially into the offside and a dropped catch meant the Foxes scrambled two to win the match by one wicket.
