Tattersall Anchors Leicestershire in Hard‑Fought Championship Draw

Glamorgan and Leicestershire both continue their search for first wins in the Rothesay County Championship after a stale draw at Sophia Gardens.

The two newly promoted sides played out their first clash in the top division since 2001 in a predictably strung-out, three-innings draw, with hands shaken at 5pm.

Jonny Tattersall completed his century after returning 86 not out to take Leicestershire to 585 for 7 declared before Asa Tribe’s unbeaten half-century assured Glamorgan to 137 for 2 from their 52-over second innings.

Ben Cox returned with Tattersall with Leicestershire sat on a first innings total of 500 for 5 after day three. The pair, playing for milestones, reached their century partnership with the ease at the crease unchanged from the last two-and-a-half days. Cox’s 68 not out added the late flurry in an otherwise time-petering morning session.

Kiran Carlson picked up a second wicket in his longest stint of bowling since the opening game of 2024 where Middlesex batted for 211 overs to respond to Sam Northeast’s Lord’s record triple-century. The 2 for 99 from 33 overs today included time spent bowling in his weathered Glamorgan cap instead of opting for the third new ball.

When Green tried to up the ante, he was bowled by Andy Gorvin and some late additions to the tally by Ajaz Patel was determined enough for the Foxes with 146 to play with to secure their chance of an innings win inside 69 overs.

As necessary as a declaration was to prevent the game from being subdued and farcical, the result was unlikely if the eight wickets in the last two days was anything to go by.

The hybrid pitch offered more than previous days but in minimal portions. Carlson suffered two blows in the same Josh Hull over, one to the forearm, one to the rib but continued to battle on despite the draw being all but certain to give Tribe a second half-century partner.

Tom Scriven fielded in place of Jake Weatherald after the Australian retired hurt late on day two and never returned to the field despite not being injury replaced, keeping his eligible against Nottinghamshire in the next fixture.
